   ENZYMATIC  BIODIESEL PROCESS

Resin-based enzymatic biodiesel technology is used to convert high FFA and low cost feedstock to ASTM D6751 specs Biodiesel. Advantage of enzymes is in their ability to easily convert FFA to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) at temperatures around 95 degrees Fahrenheit, and with low methanol.

Enzymatic Reaction:

  1. First all the glycerides are first hydrolyzed to FFA
  2. Then the FFA and methanol are esterified to produce FAME.

NOTE: When using high-FFA feedstock, the hydrolysis step has already occurred and the main job of the enzyme becomes the conversion of FFA to FAME. In the esterification step, water is produced and absorbed into the heavy phase, which also consists of glycerol, excess methanol and enzymes. Conveniently, water is a necessary component to activate the enzymes and does not lead to soapy contaminants, like traditional processes.

Enzyme Recovery: To recover the enzymes, the reaction mixture must go through two different stages of Settling. First, initial settling results in a heavy phase that includes glycerol, methanol, water and enzymes, as well as a light phase of crude biodiesel. At this point, the crude biodiesel can be withdrawn from the reactor and distilled to ASTM D6751 specs, while the heavy phase requires further separation.

The second stage of settling results in a transparent glycerin phase, which falls to the bottom of the reaction vessel, and the enzymes, which migrate to the interface between crude biodiesel and glycerin.  A portion of the glycerin phase is withdrawn and refined, while the remaining glycerin and the layer of active enzymes are retained in the reactor and re-used to catalyze the next reaction. This allows 8 to 10 enzyme re-uses, with a 10% addition of fresh enzymes to each batch. The glycerin can be cleaned easily to 80 percent purity with simple vacuum distillation to remove methanol and water. If a processor chooses to add additional processing, such as resins, filtration or active carbon, this glycerin could be purified to greater than 97 percent. In either event, the glycerin can be sold into value-added applications not normally available for crude glycerin.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION
 
  • This unit is capable of producing over 100,000 gallons per year by the push of a button. The entire process is automated, just add the Potassium Hydroxide and let it run.
  • 8″ Touch panel display allows easy operation and monitoring. Notifications will appear if the PLC notices any problems that occur.
  • This unit can hold up to 66 lbs. of dry wash media. The dry wash towers were designed for quick, easy and clean changing of the dry wash media.
  • A PLC monitors the process to ensure that each batch runs smoothly.
  • Excess methanol is recovered from the biodiesel and re-used in the next batch.
  • All plumbing, pump heads, and valves are 304 stainless steel to ensure the best chemical reaction.
  • Heating – Heating element located in the processing and finishing tanks (internal electric heaters)
  • Large access holes in the top all of the tanks make cleaning very easy.
  • The entire unit is mounted on wheels making it very easy to move around.
  • Tanks will be needed to hold feedstock, byproduct, and biodiesel.
